"What significance is a man if he does nothing
to improve his community? Our goal is to make better man in order
to make a better community ... One of the most fundamental
duties of our chapter is to instill our virtues and
values from current
Brothers to New Members and educate New Members about
our rich heritage."
My name is Christopher Powell and it is an honor to serve as the New Membership Educator for Alpha Sigma Phi. It is the job of the educator to lead young men in a positive direction for college and life. This education process initiates the beginning stage for brothers to pass along their knowledge about the fraternity and their lives. Each committee member and myself will lead a positive path for young men to travel along through their journey at college. Traveling down the path, each pledge will be assisted and encouraged to better the man through the creation and perpetuation of brotherhood to develop physically, socially, mentally and spiritually. As pledges travel, they will build bonds with one another and brothers that will last for an eternity.
One of the
most fundamental duties of our chapter is to instill
our virtues and values from current Brothers to New Members
and educate New Members about our rich heritage. New
Memberships Meetings are designed to facilitate the integration
of New Members into our proud Brotherhood. To Better
the Man, a handbook published by the Alpha Sigma Phi
National Office, serves as our facilitation tool through
the New Membership Semester.
Business Meetings
allow Brothers and New Members to organize and develop
important tasks that range from community service projects,
social and fundraising events, Brotherhood Development
activities, and any collective effort to better the community,
Murray State University, and the Fraternity. Business
Meetings are typically held every Sunday at 6:00 p.m.
“As powerful as a genuine brother can be, it serves
little purpose if it is not focused towards the good
of the larger community to which it belongs…No
matter how strong the love and
commitment to the Brotherhood
may be, it if is not based on commitment to high ideals
it will not be successful. A street gang, for example,
has a strong sense of Brotherhood, but it is of little
value to its community.”—To Better the
Man
“Never doubt that a small group
of thoughtful committed people can change the world.
Indeed, it’s
the only thing that ever has.” —Margaret
Mead
What significance is a man if he does nothing to improve
his community? Our goal is to
make better man in order to make a better community.
Charity through community service is a perfect avenue
for New Members and the Brotherhood to give back to the
community. We require New Members to complete at least
one community service project with a 100% attendance,
and we always encourage additional projects.
Since Alpha Sigma Phi is a social Fraternity, it is
very important for our New Members to interact their
fraternity community. One of the most fundamental aspects
of our program is to provide opportunities to apply to
the virtues and values that they learn in New Membership
Meetings in a real-life social atmosphere. We require
New Members to sponsor one social event a semester. The
Phi Class hosted a 70’s Roller Skate Party, while
the Chi Class organized an Old School Field Day.
It is important to understand the business aspect of
the Fraternity, because bills do not pay themselves.
Like the Fraternity, New Members have to raise funds
to cover needed expenditures such as:
- Class Paddle, which contains the names of
all of the New Members
initiated.
- Class Shirts
- House Improvement, which allows New Members
to personalize
the fraternity house
in some way.
- Social Event
- Philanthropy/Community Service
Event
One of our highest priorities is academic performance.
Alpha Sigma Phi was originally founded as a literary
society at Yale University. Here at Delta Tau, we strive
to preserve our academic traditions. Our New Membership
Education Program reinforces this notion by requiring
New Members to maintain six study hours per week in one
of Murray State’s libraries. Scholastically minded
Brothers monitor these study hours and provide tutoring
if needed. In addition, study hour requirements may be
satisfied by attending academic enrichment events, such
as lectures, seminars, symposiums, and plays. We require
our New Members to maintain a minimum overall grade point
average of 2.5.
I would like to emphasize that the fraternity expects
all of these requirements from its active Brothers, not
just the New Members. I hope that this information has
provided a good idea the ideals our Fraternity strives
to reflect. Again, feel free to contact me with questions
or for additional information.
Sincerely,
Christopher Powell
